ARCH1201 Project 1 Adolf Loos' Writings

The Thinking Behind Adolf Loos’ Works
(summary from his essay, Ornament and Crime, written 1908)

The Papuan slaughters his enemies and devours them,
He is not a criminal.
But, if a Modern person slaughters his enemies and devours them,
He is a criminal.

People were depressed because they could no longer create new ornament.
I was thinking of bringing joy to the world.

Therefore, the evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornamentation from objects of everyday use.

The greatness of our age is the inability to create new ornament.
We have gone beyond ornament.
We have achieved plain, undecorated, and simplicity.

Ornament is not a source of increased pleasure in life.
Though, it is beatutiful.

I have reasons.
It leads to the waste of human labour.
Health is wasted.
Both, waste of money.
Materials are also abused.
The damage of time can not be repaired.

Ornament is no longer expression of our culture.
Ornament is a symptom of backwardness or degeneracy.
Ornament is a criminal.

Ornament can no longer be produced by someone living on the cultural today.
Lack of ornamentation is a sign of intellectual strength

ARCH1102 Studio Exp3 -Final-

The main elevator is used to connect external spaces while the internal spaces are connected by small elevators. The main elevator moves from the starting point to the second level bridge at the cut beam. There are two pathway options, left one is owned by Slim and right one is owned by Zhang Yin.

Carlos Slim's Space
Slim space somehow acts as if it is inside a massive construction. His space is constructed inside a glass box where this box has incoherent concrete frames wrapping it. This is to show that how Slim have the strength of controlling. Also, His space takes more spaces compare to others related to the idea of dominating. When Slim enters his space, there will be a pathway that he has to follow. The pathway is an L shape and by then end, he will meet a small elevator. This elevator bridges the end of the pathway to the office space. This space will be used for his staffs and clients to work. Thus, at the other end, there will be a small elevator that will lead to the lower office space which is where Slim works. There will be an enormous space for him. There are stairs to divide the space. This space will lead to a pathway which exit at the first level bridge at the cut beam.

Zhang Yin
Zhang’s space shows the idea of progression. This is show by the placement of the cubes that are put on top of each other. The small elevators are going up connecting the internal space. This is to show that Zhang seems to have potential. Thus, she is also influential because she can bring things together as in the small elevators work together to move to the highest space. Zhang’s exterior space can be seen from every side that it shows how she is being respected. The exit part from Zhang is a slim and slender vertical beam going down.

The main elevator will pick Slim and Zhang and will lead them to the dining table. The dining table space has been intended to be in different shape and form from the office space. It uses the idea of hanging and most part of the space is covered by the massive triangulation structure. The main elevator will move here and will take Slim and Zhang to their position when eating at the dining table. Also, it will take Slim and Zhang back to their office spaces at the second level bridge at the cut beam.

ARCH1102 Studio Exp3 -Tips-

Architecture is about space, light, and form. It is about how we connect the spaces and also link it to the environment. There should be a good concept that based on each and every space that we construct.

Tips: Save as many times as you can. There is no auto-recover. :)

ARCH1102 Studio Exp3 -Dining Table-

The table is a combination of a dining table and a meeting table. The overall shape is round just to give more sense of togetherness instead of competition. Slim and Zhang will approach the table from one elevator from each side where they seat. The meeting table is covered by a wall to emphasize the dining table because it is the main intention.

Carlos Slim's Dining Table
The table is carved for him to show how he becomes part of the table. This shows how ambitious he is and how he dominates and controls by having his position by carving the table. The chairback has stick coming out to indicate his strength.

Zhang Yin's Dining Table

She has a small additional table without legs on top of the dining table to show how she always has the potential of progressing. Thus. also influential and respected. The chair outline looks as if it is a spiral that is going up to show her development.
