ARCH1202 Tracing and Mapping

Coogee Beach Community Centre

The site is located at 32 degree south latitude and 115 degree east latitude with 42 km altitude. This gives the true north 12 degree deviation with the magnetic north.

The brief of my design will involve site analysis conditions to identify opportunities and also problems before designing. Therefore, it will contain information that will give the image of the CBCC environment situations also any necessary information that will explain the words reciprocity, threshold, materiality, insertion, and infrastructure.

Analysis of the Environment Situations

Sun Analysis

In the summer, the days are long and the sun is high in the sky. During the long summer days, the sun does not rise exactly in the east, but rises to the south of east and sets to the south of west allowing it to be in the sky for a longer period of time.
In the winter, the days are short and the sun in low in the sky. During the short winter days, the sun does not rise exactly in the east, but instead rises just north of east and it sets north of west.

Wind Analysis

The site is exposed to three predominant wind directions which are northeast, south and west. The summer wind will have cooling effect. The winter wind will be make the winter cooler.

Site Access

All roads are two ways traffic expect Alfred Street, the west border of the site. The site are accessed by people through the east and west entrances. The car parking is at the north, east, and west borders. The bus stop is located at the east border.

People's Flow

The crowded area during summer and winter will be along Coogee Bay Road and Arden Street. These are the main roads. People at the beach will be more crowded during summer rather than winter.

Reciprocity, Threshold, Materiality, Insertion, and Infrastructure.

The site is bordered by buildings on three sides and water on on side. Imagine by having the site, the insertion of the fences will be the threshold with the buildings and the insertion of trees will be the threshold with the beach.
The idea of materiality is shown by the soil gound (brown lines), field (green lines), and water (blue lines).

The idea of reciprocity is shown by the height of buildings following the contour line as if the architecture is the part of the landscape.
The idea of materiality is expressed through the use of mostly bricks buildings and its relationship with the ground.

The first image is about the threshold of landscape, natural, and manmade architecture. The site is a natural one. This means that it has the characteristic of the environment.
The second image is talking about public and private place. The site is a public place because it can be accessed by anyone and the gate is often opened.
The third one is showing the commercial and residential buildings. The site is located near the commercial buildings. Commercial buidings are usually found in places where public gather.

This image shows the materiality of the site consisting of soil, grass, brickwork, and asphalt.

There are many trees that surrounds the site.

This image of infrastructure shows that there are enough lights around the site because it is a public area. It is also close to the main road where there are more lights.

This image of pipes distribution are showing that the site is located in an area that rain water will gather that it needs double pipes to let the water flow faster to the sea. The rain water being absorbed is also supported by the large amount of green area (field) and trees on the site.
